With perennials, trees and shrubs, you can create a water-wise landscape that is colorful and visually interesting throughout all four of the seasons. Take a look at these plantings from a garden tour presented by Martha Stewart for inspiration and ideas to design your own garden. This beautiful phormium tenax is a drought resistant perennial that offers 6 to 10 feet of year-round rich color and architectural shape.

Culinary herbs and fig and persimmon fruit trees surround this simple dining area making it a perfect outdoor space for relaxing and enjoying meals.

A cotinus coggygria forma purpureus (purple smoke bush) brings a pop of color and texture with its passion colored coin-shaped foliage.

As a relative of the edible pistachio, this pistacia chinensis (Chinese pistache) tree will grow between 20 and 40 feet tall. With its fantastic foliage of fall colors in autumn, this pistacia tree can serve as a centerpiece for a sitting area that can be enjoyed any time of year.

This vibrant senecio mandraliscae (kleinia) is a member of the daisy family and grows up to 2 feet tall in full sun. Easily grown, this succulent makes a great ground cover with serene blue foliage that does not require heavy watering.
