Summer calls for outdoor entertaining! Learn how this family took their patio from drab to fab without a landscaping overhaul.

The retaining wall was put in place as a solution to the sloping ground around the existing patio. By using large, misfired concrete tiles on top of the wall, the designer turned the retaining wall into additional seating for guests. When not in use, the retaining wall serves as a surface for planters and other garden accents. A flexible plastic pipe now runs from the downspout and away from the home to prevent water buildup on the new patio.

The homeowners made the water wise decision to remove a vast majority of the grass and fill the space with pavers and river rocks. The pavers provide a flat surface to support the table and chairs. To make the design more interesting, the homeowners  dividing the space into small units using pavers instead of one dull slab of concrete.

Before

Chimney flues serve as the base of the table, supported by 4-6’’ stone blocks that raise the surface to a comfortable seating height. You can find flues at a masonry supply store.
